Cats – Dietary Advice

February 25, 2011 in Home by petlovers

Cats are generally pretty self-sufficient creatures – as long as you feed them and give them fuss from time to time, they’re fine. But what should you be feeding them to keep them strong and healthy? Well, firstly it’s important that you give them good quality food as often cheap food contains harmful toxins that can make them ill. This was highlighted during a recent scandal when cheap Chinese cat food was found to be full of chemicals that were harmful to cats.

You should also aim to feed your cat wet food wherever you can as it generally has more nutritious value than dry food. Of course, much of what you feed your cat will depend on what the cat likes as some are much fussier than others, but most of them love chicken, lamb and beef so these are always good options. You can also feed them other meat when it is in season, from animals such as rabbit to poultry such as pheasant.

Lions, tigers, panthers and all the other cats that exist in the wild often eat lots of raw meat on a regular basis. Raw meat can be a great way to keep your cat strong and healthy as it offers a really good source of protein. Domesticated cats sometimes have more problems with digestion though, so it’s important that you make sure the meat is cut into small chunks wherever possible and that it’s in season. Also check to make sure all the meat you give them is good quality.

If you can’t afford lots of good quality raw meat to keep your cat healthy, then don’t worry. The vast majority of commercial cat food brands offer tasty, nutritionally balanced alternatives that will be very good for your cat. The manufacturers have spent millions of dollars researching exactly what nutrients cats need and have put all of that science into creating the best food they possibly can, so as long as you don’t buy the cheap varieties, commercial food is fine.

Lastly, it’s really important that you make sure to give your cat food served in clean bowls. This will help prevent the spread of infection, which will keep your cat in great shape. You should also make sure your cat always has access to lots of fresh, clean water. This will help them with their digestion process and it’s especially important to give them water if you feed them any dry food, which takes more effort to digest. Water also helps to keep their coats shiny and healthy.

Kittens – Getting Your Home Ready For A New Arrival

January 31, 2011 in Home by petlovers

Coming back to an empty house after suffering an especially tough day at work is enough to depress anyone. Even a house full of children seems empty without a pet. Whether you live alone or are adding a friend to the household, a kitten is one of the cutest pets you can find. Of course there will be lots of excitement, but be sure to properly prepare your home for the arrival of your new kitten.

As human beings, we stand upright much of the time and walk on two legs. It’s easy to forget the things below our line of sight that would be irresistible and potentially dangerous to a kitten that spends its life close to the floor. It might sound silly, but you have to think like a kitten. Get low and start to explore. Look up frequently and even lie on your back so that you get a good look at things that dangle like wires, cords, and stray pieces of cloth. It’s a good idea to secure these items with tape or under rugs so that no harm comes to your new kitten. You can’t stop a kitten from leaping, but you can greatly reduce the chances that one of those jumps will use up one of its nine lives.

Kittens are often quite active, so make sure that there is an array of safe objects available for the kitten to play with. They love balls, stuffed mice, and some will even go out of their minds chasing the light from a laser pointer. Scratching posts are a good idea too. Don’t get so anxious to bring a kitten home that you forget to have a supply of food on hand as well as a full litter box. It goes without saying that you would have a mess to clean up if there is no place for the furry little guy to take a restroom break.

Human beings are not the only things on the planet that suffer from fright and stress. Kittens also experience the same emotions, so you will want to set up a room in which your new friend can relax and get away for a bit. A spare bedroom (or your own), a closet, or any protected room is suitable. Be sure that it is accessible enough that the kitten can find it on its own because you don’t want to force it into a place that is supposed to be comfortable.

By preparing your home for the arrival of a new kitten, your little companion will have a much more pleasant experience while getting used to its new home. Happier kittens lead to happier owners. Your kitten’s life as well as your own will be much more relaxed.
